Sales of the United States Mint’s most popular gold and silver bullion coins rebounded in March 2012, following an unusually slow month in February. Also this month, the US Mint began sales of the 2012 American Gold Buffalo bullion coins.
For the month of March, the US Mint recorded sales of 62,500 troy ounces worth of Gold Eagles. This included 57,500 one ounce coins, 2,000 half ounce coins, and 40,000 tenth ounce coins. The total sales in ounces is nearly triple the prior month sales, which were just 21,000 ounces. However, the monthly total is lower when compared to the year ago period of March 2011 when 73,500 ounces worth of coins were sold.
The monthly sales total for the one ounce Silver Eagles reached 2,542,000. This was up from the prior month when just 1,490,000 coins were sold, but once again down from the year ago period when 2,767,000 coins were sold.
With the first quarter of the year completed, Silver Eagle sales have reached 10,139,000. This is down 18.42% from the 12,429,000 coins sold during the first quarter of 2011. Unless the pace of sales picks up, the streak of record breaking annual sale totals for the coins may be at an end.
