A unique NGC-certified half dime draws spirited bidding in June sale

The recently re-discovered rarity is being offered by GreatCollections.

The only known example of an 1871 standard silver half dime is generating excitement, with 43 bids pushing its price over $18,000 in a GreatCollections auction. Bidding concludes June 20, 2021, for the recently rediscovered coin, which has been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).

The 1871 J-1067a half dime is graded NGC PF-60 and is pedigreed to the Farouk Collection. It is offered in the GreatCollections sale as lot 990317. The design was created by Chief Mint Engraver James Longacre and was issued after his death in 1869.

Standard silver patterns were issued between 1869 and 1871. Because of the variety of designs, metal compositions, and denominations, it is surmised they were meant to target collectors. The issuance of the half dime would come to an end in 1873.
