On October 1 at 12 noon (ET), the U.S. Mint is set to release the 2018 Breast Cancer Awareness Coin and Stamp Set (18CL). The set includes a U.S. Postal Service breast cancer research stamp and a breast cancer awareness Proof half dollar. The Proof half dollar possesses a reeded edge and features the “S” mint mark of the San Francisco Mint. The set, priced at $39.95, has a product limit of 25,000 and a household order limit of one, while the mintage limit varies. The 2018 Breast Cancer Awareness Coin and Stamp Set is a part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Program, which funds research to improve treatment outcomes of those affected.
The stamp is designed by Ethel Kessler and features an illustration by Whitney Sherman with accompanying phrases FUND THE FIGHT and FIND A CURE.
The obverse features two women: An older woman with a peaceful expression placing her hands on her chest and a younger woman with an expression of determination holding a raised fist. A butterfly soars over the two women. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, the year 2018, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
The reverse of the Proof half dollar features a tiger swallowtail butterfly in motion and is meant to symbolize the concept of hope. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the denomination HALF DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and BREAST CANCER AWARENESS.
