This is a busy week for collectors and the Mint’s numismatic operations. Yesterday, the Mint began accepting orders for rolls and bags of America the Beautiful / Frederick Douglass National Historic Site quarters, and a coin forum concerning the quarters was held at Mint headquarters at 801 9th Street. The official launch ceremony commenced at 10 this morning, and at noon, the annual Congratulations Set will be made available. And on Thursday, ordering will commence for the American Liberty 225th-anniversary high-relief gold coin will.
The Congratulations Set isn’t normally a numismatic event—in fact, it isn’t really a “set” in the usual sense of the word. The combination of an American Eagle silver Proof coin in a capsule affixed to a bi-fold card could arguably be called a “Congratulations Gift Card.” Nonetheless, the product has been a reliable item for gift-givers since it was launched in 2012. It’s normally released with a West Point Mint Proof coin, with no fanfare.
For its 225th-anniversary year, however, the Mint has promised a number of surprises, and this year’s Congratulations Set is one of them: the usual W-Mint coin has been replaced with one from the San Francisco Mint, bearing the S mintmark. The 2017 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set will also contain a San Francisco ASE; the product limit for this annual item is typically 50,000. There’s no guarantee that the 2017 Proof silver Eagle coin will be limited to 125,000 strikes (which would make it something of a rarity), but for many collectors it will be worth it to try to score a purchase before the Congratulations Set sells out. At best, the purchase will be a minor rarity; at worst, it will be a useful gift item for a friend or loved one who’s celebrating a milestone event this year.
Ordering for the 2017 Congratulations Set (product code 17RF) commences today (April 4) at noon Eastern Time (ET). Priced at $54.95, the set features an American Eagle 1-ounce silver Proof Coin bearing the S mintmark of the San Francisco Mint. The coin is encapsulated and mounted in an attractive presentation folder adorned with black, gold, and silver ribbon curls to add a festive and elegant flair. A certificate of authenticity is printed on the back of the folder, while coin specifications are printed on the back of the sleeve. The product limit is 75,000; there is no household order limit.
