The Perth Mint has released the ninth design in its Australian Map Shaped Coin series: the 2016 Great White Shark 1 oz. Silver Coin. This issue costs $99.09 AUD ($71.11 USD) and is composed of 99.9% silver, with a mintage limited to 6,000 pieces.
The coin’s reverse, designed by Ing Ing Jong, features an image of a great white shark swimming in the ocean near a sunken ship; the background of this scene is rendered in color, while the shark is engraved in silver. Inscribed in the field are GREAT WHITE SHARK, 1 OZ 999 SILVER, 2016, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is encircled by the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 2016, and 1 DOLLAR. The unusual shape of the coin follows the outline of the the Australian continent, making a sort of “map.”
The coin comes packaged in a custom display case with a certificate of authenticity. For more information on this and other Australian map-shaped coins, please visit the Web site of the Perth Mint.

Great design! Do coins like this go up in value or is more of a display piece?
